Last Brigade Day

We are writing again from the bus on our way to the last brigade day.

Yesterday was a great success for all three brigade groups. The medical group continued their work in La Ceiba and each day the clinics run even more efficiently with approximately 300 patients through. The dentists are continuing to provide extractions and creating lots of new smiles with their ability to do fillings. The physicians have treated a number of community members, many with very preventable illness as a product of poor living conditions and lack of access to health care. The medical/dental group will hold their final clinic today.

The public health and water teams very successfully finished their construction yesterday. Today they will carry on with education in the local schools to teach about the importance of hygiene and water. Both groups have prepared great lessons and the water group a song to teach to the kids!

The group attended a cultural dancing event last night and had a great time. We look forward to a fiesta tonight and the much anticipated soccer tournament against the Flor Azul boys tomorrow.

Until next time...

Brigade Time

Hola from El Paraiso!

We are currently in a bus on the way to our second brigade day ! Who knew you could access internet on the road.

We arrived safely to San Pedro Sula on Saturday after a long day of travel and took a 6-7 hour bus ride to the compound we are staying at, Rapaco. It is absolutely beautiful, we are eating well and sleeping little in order to work a lot.

Sunday the Public Health and Water groups went into their respective communities to meet the families they will be working with and to see the former infrastructure/water system. It was a long hike for both groups but they returned enthusiastic to get to work and happy to have met such lovely people and families.

The Medical/Dental group spent Sunday preparing for their week clinics and visiting a nearby orphanage where we played for hours with all the kids!

Yesterday all three groups went out into the communities for their first brigade day. The Medical/Dental team had a very successful first clinic and saw all 300 patients set to come for the day. Highlights of the care we can deliver this year are the pap smears for women, prostate exams for men and fillings in the dental station. We know we are now contributing to both immediate needs and doing some preventative health care which is very encouraging.

The Public Health group worked hard mixing cement and preparing to lay the concrete floors in their two family's home. The Water group also worked hard to digging trenches and the students may have set a record by laying 360m of pipe in a single day- amazing. Both groups will be preparing educational sessions to give in the local schools later this week.

We are off on our second day and look forward to writing again as soon as we can get access to an internet connection. Thank you for patiently watching the blog, we hope everyone is well at home!

Year Three..And We're Off!

For the 2011 reading week the Global Brigades group will be heading to Honduras for the third year. The group of 81 individuals has been working extremely hard to get ready for three brigades: medical/dental, public health and water projects.

Tonight was our final packing night, the bags are all lined up and ready for our 7:00am departure from Mount Allison tomorrow morning.

We want to thank everyone who has made it possible for us to get this far- we look forward to sharing our adventure with you all and wish you all the best in the coming week.

We will write again from the Newark hotel where we will have an overnight before our 9am departure for San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Due to relative inaccessibility to internet services, we will be doing our best to update the blog in Honduras every 2-3 days. We wish we could update more.

Until Newark... Thanks for following

Homeward Bound

Hola Everyone,

First of all we would like to apologize for the lack of posting in the past few days. We had no access to internet where we were staying and were at the discretion of the staff as to when we could reach a computer.

The first flight leaving for Halifax will leave in about 5 minutes and the second flight will be leaving Newark at 12:00 this afternoon. We hope to arrive back in Sackville early this evening and try and catch the big game somewhere in between!

Last night the group got together here at the hotel and reflected on the week. The students and professionals alike were impacted immensely by their experience and by what they gave to and received from the Honduran people.

The past few days of the brigade were fantastic with the public health and medical group accomplishing above and beyond what they expected to achieve. The public health group who worked with two families throughout the week were able to provide concrete floors, water storage units, latrines and clean cooking stoves for each household. In addition they pooled their money together to buy the families a month worth supply of staple foods, something these families would not normally have access to. With the donations we collected before the trip and things of their own, the group provided the families with clothing, footwear, backpacks and more.

The medical brigade was equally successful providing healthcare and donations for 687 people on their last day alone. The students and health professionals worked brilliantly as a team and learned from each other and their patients.

The Global Brigades staff quickly recognized the group's dedication to the movement and was sad to let us go. We left behind many supplies for the next group and with enthusiasm for the brigade next year!

We will post pictures and a final word later- Thank you for following and for all of your support.
